Before Jesus went back to heaven, He made a promise to His friends: “I will not leave you alone. I will send you a Helper.” This Helper is the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity.
Fifty days after Easter, the disciples were praying together with Mary. Suddenly they heard a sound like a strong wind, and something like tongues of fire came to rest on each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit!
The disciples had been afraid, but now they were brave. They went out and told everyone about Jesus. We call this day Pentecost, the birthday of the Church.
The Bible uses signs to help us think about the Holy Spirit: wind, fire, water and a dove.
We first receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism. He lives in us and helps us pray, be brave, choose what is good and love like Jesus. In Confirmation we receive the Spirit in a special, strengthening way.
