In the very beginning there was no sky, no sea, no trees and no animals. Then God spoke: “Let there be light!” And there was light.
Day by day God made more and more. He made the sky and the seas. He made dry land with flowers and trees. He made the sun, the moon and the twinkling stars. He filled the water with fish and the air with birds, and He made animals of every kind.
Last of all, God made people. Each time God looked at what He had made, He saw that it was good. When He finished, He looked at everything and saw that it was very good!
Everything God made tells us something about Him. The mountains show how strong He is. The flowers show how beautiful He is. Rain and food show how He takes care of us.
God gave people a special job: to take care of His world. Saint Francis of Assisi loved creation so much that he called the sun his brother and the moon his sister, and he praised God for them.
